Ted Dawson, recently retired member of the Board of Trustees of Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin, received the Ivy Tech 2011 Leaving a Legacy Award during a special ceremony held at the college on October 18. Begun in 2005, the Leaving a Legacy luncheon is an event whose purpose is to bring dedicated retirees and current staff together to keep in touch and to honor retirees for their generosity with their time, treasure, and/or talents for the good of Ivy Tech students. John Roberts, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin; Andrea Quick, Director of McDowell Adult Basic Education Center; and Nichole Nolting, Adult Education Coordinator for McDowell Adult Basic Education Center, will give a presentation titled Springboard: Access to Success at the National Council for Student Development on October 22-25 at the Inverness Conference Center & Hotel in Denver. The National Council on Student Development is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges, dedicated to serving the needs of student development professionals in the community college. Columbus resident Bryan O’Neal has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship to attend Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin by Schaeffer Manufacturing Company, of St. Louis, through the National Young Farmer Program. Recipients of these scholarships are required to come from a farm family, be enrolled to attend a state agricultural or related college, and have plans to major in an agricultural or related degree.

Roger Bingham, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Community Service Director at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin, will give a presentation on service learning at the 2011 Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism, scheduled for October 12 and 13 at the Sheraton Hotel in Indianapolis. Service learning is a combination of community service and classroom instruction with a focus on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility.
Kim Haza, program chair of industrial technology and advanced manufacturing at Ivy Tech-Columbus/Franklin, and Jim Silberstein, assistant professor in the Gayle and Bill Cook Center for Entrepreneurship in the School of Business at Ivy Tech-Bloomington, will travel to Wuxi, China, Columbus’ sister city, to teach electronics, compare curricula and programs, and discuss business practices with faculty in the Professional College of Science and Technology in Wuxi.

The enrollment of military and veteran students at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin nearly doubled this fall compared to last fall, and I’m sure that at least part of that increase is due to the improvements made with Operation Diploma Grant funding.
