The recently initiated English for Speakers of Other Languages program at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus has expanded to include the Franklin campus. Due to the growth of the program, classes will be taught in both Columbus and Franklin. The program assists speakers of languages other than English in improving their English language proficiency.
Placement testing dates have been set for June 21 and July 19 at the Columbus campus and June 28 and July 26 at the Franklin campus. The test can take from one and a half hours to three hours, depending upon the language capability of the test-taker. Advising follows the test and takes approximately 30 minutes. Both the testing and the advising appointments must be scheduled by contacting Debbie East, ESOL Program Coordinator, at 812-374-5330 or deast8@ivytech.edu. The test is free of charge.

Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus is instituting a Summer Academy for Kids and Teens, age 7 to 16, for the first time this year. Six different classes will provide both fun and learning for teens and kids.
Classes for which kids can register are Fishing Clinic: The Mechanics of Tournament Bass Fishing, offered on Wednesday, June 16, from noon until 5:00 pm; LuvU2 – Relationship Smarts for Teens, offered on Saturday, June 19, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm; Awesome Authors – Write your own book!, offered on two Wednesdays, June 23 and 30, from 10:00 until noon; Home Skills for Teens – Learn basic auto skills, small engine skills, home skills, and grilling basics, offered on Friday, July 30, from 8:00 until noon; Patriotic Kids Carnival – Featuring a BLACKHAWK helicopter!, offered on Wednesday, June 30, from noon until 5:00 pm; and Whimsical Signs Art Workshop – Create a bright, fun, personalized sign, offered on three Wednesdays, July 7, 14, and 21, from 10:00 am until noon.

Headcount for summer semester at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus is up 16% compared to the first day of summer semester last year.
Ivy Tech’s first-day summer headcount figure was 2,648 as the college began the summer semester on May 24. First-day headcount for the summer term last year totaled 2,284.
The number of full-time equivalent (FTE) students is also up 16% as compared to last summer term. FTE for first-day headcount this summer totaled 945 as compared to 812 last summer.
Chancellor John Hogan commented, “We are pleased to continue to serve an increasing number of area residents by providing programs in which there is strong demand.”

Shana Wiley, a resident of Waldron, has been named the recipient of the Hari Mirchandani Community Service Award. This award is given annually to an Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus student in recognition of his or her love of community and selflessness in service to others. It is named after Hari Mirchandani, the first full-time faculty member to be employed by Ivy Tech-Columbus, who was greatly respected and appreciated by his students because of his concern for and willingness to help them achieve. Jessica Cravens was named Outstanding Graduate in general studies; Mark Newton, in computer information systems; Lucinda Weisner, in practical nursing; Geena Fields, in accounting; Renea Summers, in liberal arts; Kaylyn Shinolt, in interior design; and Anna Montgomery, in visual communications.
