Ivy Tech unveils Advanced Manufacturing Institute
Monday, January 26th, 2009
The Advanced Manufacturing Institute at Ivy Tech Community College made its public debut Friday morning.
Ivy Tech President Thomas Snyder told representatives of regional manufacturing companies who attended the Institute’s “unveiling” that the Advanced Manufacturing Institute is the foundation of what could become a network of facilities used across Indiana to improve the economic well-being of the state and to provide companies and individuals the training and certifications they need to succeed in the global economy.
“The Advanced Manufacturing Institute in Columbus offers the programs and equipment necessary to provide manufacturers in Indiana with a workforce that not only has technical aptitudes but also the interpersonal skills necessary to perform in the workplace,” Snyder said.
The Advanced Manufacturing Institute began offering classes last June and is the third of four Institutes created by Ivy Tech’s Columbus Region. The college established a Corporate Training Institute in 2005, a Management Supervisory Institute in 2006. This month, Ivy Tech launched its Six Sigma Institute, which is currently providing free training to City of Columbus employees in an effort to find efficiencies within governmental departments.
Ivy Tech – Columbus invested more than $1.5 million to improve the facility and increase its personnel to accommodate an inflow of degree-seeking students and corporate clients seeking workforce training for their employees. The state is realizing a return on that investment, according to Snyder, stating Ivy Tech’s Columbus Region is serving more than 300 students who are seeking degrees in manufacturing and more than 400 area residents who are seeking workforce training.
And despite the economic downturn, Ivy Tech officials are expecting increasing enrollments in the manufacturing field as they have grown consistently for the last few semesters.
Enrollment in the Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Technology programs at Ivy Tech – Columbus jumped from 89 students in 2005 to 281 in 2008 – a 316 percent increase.
“[Ivy Tech’s] Advanced Manufacturing Institute offers up-to-date training with state-of-the-art technology and a dedicated, professional faculty that provides and equips each student with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in today’s global marketplace,” said Steve Coffman, Training and Learning Specialist for Cummins Inc.
The Advanced Manufacturing Institute is in an 11,000 square-foot building along Middle Road in Columbus. The building houses a 6,600 square-foot manufacturing lab, where students are taught hydraulics, pneumatics, welding, and robotics. Two instructional classrooms and one teaching lab for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) equipment are in the facility.
“Our corporate clients often ask what type of training we can offer them,” said Sue Smith, Ivy Tech’s Executive Director of Workforce and Economic Development. “The simple answer is we can deliver all types of training you may need to improve your workforce, be more productive, and increase your bottom line.”

Grant-funded MSSC class offered free at Ivy Tech
Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
Ivy Tech Community College is offering a Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) class tuition free as a result of a grant from the State of Indiana Department of Workforce Development received in 2008. The class, which normally costs $2300 per student, will be held from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm on Tuesdays, from February 10 through June 9, at the Columbus campus of Ivy Tech.
MSSC is a nationwide training program offered to provide a well-rounded knowledge of the modern manufacturing environment. It is an industry-based skills standard, assessment, and certification system for all sectors of manufacturing covering the four key areas of manufacturing, including safety, quality, production and processes, and maintenance awareness. MSSC issues a Recognition Award for successes in each of the four areas and a full MSSC Production Technician Certification for success in all four.
Ivy Tech Community College and MSSC have an exclusive agreement making Ivy Tech the exclusive provider in the State of Indiana of MSSC courses in colleges in Indiana. The College has unique expertise in advanced manufacturing and workforce certification through the curriculum it offers at 23 campuses and 25 service centers across the state.

City of Columbus to benefit from Ivy Tech Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt course
Thursday, January 15th, 2009
Ivy Tech Community College will provide a 32-hour course in Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt to all departments of the City of Columbus. Forty-six individuals, including Mayor Fred Armstrong, all department heads, and several employees of each department, are expected to participate. An organizational meeting will be held this Friday, January 16, in order to finalize the course logistics.
Mayor Armstrong became interested in the course—offered as a community service by the Workforce and Economic Development department of Ivy Tech—because of his concern about the economy, its effect on city government, and, ultimately, on the residents of Columbus. The focus of the course will be on efficiency of processes that will result in cost savings. The course will be taught by Terrill Paradise, Master Black Belt of Lean Six Sigma and Program Chair of Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Technology.
“We, in city government, are always looking for cost-cutting measures that will save the taxpayer from undue burdens. We are grateful to Ivy Tech for providing—free of charge—the Lean Six Sigma course that will lead us in this direction,” said Mayor Fred Armstrong.
The training to be offered to the city by Ivy Tech as a community service is generated through Ivy Tech’s Six Sigma Institute, which offers training, certification classes, and other specialized programs that address issues resulting from continually increasing technology and expansion of processes in business. The focus of Lean Six Sigma is to reduce business costs while improving performance and generating growth. Six Sigma training is offered at any location, including the main Ivy Tech building on Central Avenue, the nearby Advanced Manufacturing Institute, recently renovated by Ivy Tech for this purpose, or at the client’s facility or other location of his/her choosing.
