Ivy Tech announces $8 million major gifts campaign

Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin is launching the public phase of a major gifts campaign with a goal of $8 million, according to Brenda Vogel, Ivy Tech executive director of resource development. The campaign leadership team includes Jesse Brand, owner of Brands, Inc.; Hutch Shumaker, president of Coca-Cola Bottling Co.; Rick Johnson, president of Johnson Ventures; Tony Moravec, owner of Blairex Laboratories and Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor; and Mark Gerstle, vice president and chief administrative officer of Cummins Inc. Community partnerships enrich Ivy Tech nursing program

The Nurses Curriculum Committee for the State of Indiana recently approved a revised curriculum for the Ivy Tech Community College Complex Family course—part of the statewide Ivy Tech associate of science in nursing program—that depends upon and benefits from previously established partnerships between Ivy Tech’s nursing program and numerous organizations in the six-county service area of Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin. Ivy Tech Gallery of Fine Art & Design to host exhibit by Laura Knorr and Mark Braught

The Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin Gallery of Fine Art & Design is hosting an exhibit by children’s book illustrators Laura Knorr and Mark Braught until December 15. The public is invited to attend the artist reception from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28 in the gallery; hors d’oeuvres will be provided by the Ivy Tech culinary department. (more…)

Ivy Tech’s Roger Bingham to present at 2011 Governor’s Conference

Roger Bingham, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Community Service Director at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin, will give a presentation on service learning at the 2011 Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism, scheduled for October 12 and 13 at the Sheraton Hotel in Indianapolis.  Service learning is a combination of community service and classroom instruction with a focus on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility.

University Library of Columbus to host panel discussion on banned and controversial books

In honor of Banned Books Week (September 24 – October 1), the University Library of Columbus will host a panel discussion on banned and controversial books on Tuesday, September 27, from 12:00-1:30 p.m. in the Summerville Room of the Columbus Learning Center.  Interested individuals are invited to bring their lunches; beverages and dessert will be provided. The Newest Revolution

I was blessed with parents who kindled within me a love for reading. Both my Mom and Dad were avid readers, and following their lead, my sister and I could read before we even started school. This love affair with reading has continued my entire life, but it seems to be a passion shared with fewer than ever these days.

In the first day of the classes I teach for Ivy Tech Community College, I ask students to do an icebreaker exercise in order to get to know them better. The exercise contains a series of light-hearted questions like: (more…)

IUPUC and Ivy Tech to host Conversation with the Candidates

Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus and Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin will host a Conversation with the Candidates for Mayor of the City of Columbus from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Lecture Hall of the Columbus Learning Center.

Republican Kristen Brown and Democrat Priscilla Scalf will respond to questions presented to them by Jonathan Wilson, Dean of the Ivy Tech Schools of Fine Arts & Design, Education, Technology, and Applied Science & Engineering, and Mary Ferdon, Adjunct Lecturer in English and Political Science in the Division of Liberal Arts at IUPUC.

Following their welcome at noon by Dr. John Hogan, Chancellor of Ivy Tech, and Dr. Marwan Wafa, Vice Chancellor of IUPUC, Brown and Scalf will present their platforms. Questions will then be asked of each candidate by Ferdon and Wilson until 1:00 pm, when the candidates will each provide closing comments.

Questions will then be taken from the audience from 1:00 until 1:30 p.m. A reception in the Student Commons will follow.

An opportunity to register to vote will be made available through Campus Compact, a national organization dedicated to promoting community service in higher education, to which both institutions belong.
