Ivy Tech, Purdue receive grant for new engineering technology program
Monday, October 31st, 2011

The National Science Foundation has awarded Ivy Tech Community College and Purdue University nearly $1 million to start a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology transfer program.  Through the program, students will first earn an associate degree in engineering technology at Ivy Tech.  Credits then will transfer seamlessly to one of four Purdue University College of Technology sites that offer the bachelor’s degree:  South Bend, Richmond, Anderson, and Kokomo.

Currently, Ivy Tech-Columbus/Franklin students earning an associate of science in engineering technology can transfer all of their credits to the Purdue College of Technology in Anderson; officials of the Purdue College of Technology in Columbus are currently working on an agreement so that the transfer can take place locally.

Steven Bardonner, Ivy Tech-Columbus/Franklin department chair of the engineering technology program and one of the authors of the grant application for this transfer program, commented, “This is an exciting program that gives students the opportunity to get started in their postsecondary career with Ivy Tech and then to transfer to the university setting.  We are continuing to capitalize on our positive working relationship with Purdue and other four-year institutions.”

Dinner – and experience – is served!
Monday, August 8th, 2011

The room buzzed with excitement as the guests sat down for dinner at round tables covered with linen tablecloths in the multipurpose room at Mill Race Center on the evening of July 28th of this year. Wine, supplied by Smith’s Row, was available for those who were interested. Delicious, fresh-baked bread was waiting in baskets on the tables, and waiters and waitresses were poised to begin serving.

The chefs preparing the meal were six students in the Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus/Franklin culinary program and their instructor, Chef Joe Strangis, chair of the hospitality program. Jonathan Wilson, dean of the School of Fine Arts & Design, showed his support by donning a chef’s hat and becoming a server. Chef Strangis had capped the number of guests at 100, and all 100 tickets were immediately swept up. (more…)

Columbus provides a diversity of high quality preschool curriculums
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

In the past, when I wanted early childhood education students to observe a Reggio classroom, I made arrangements for a field trip to Indianapolis or Fort Wayne. This year Ivy Tech students are able to observe the Reggio approach in a classroom at the Busy Bee Academy. Students now have opportunities in Columbus to observe and work in classrooms using three well-known early childhood curriculums (Montessori, Creative Curriculum, and OWL) and two approaches (the Project Approach and Reggio Emilia) for teaching preschool age children. Students sometimes ask me which is best. (more…)
