Ivy Tech Community College – Columbus/Franklin will host two faculty members from its sister college in Wuxi, China. This visit will constitute the second faculty exchange from Wuxi since an agreement, signed in November of 2010 by Ivy Tech President Tom Snyder, finalized the sister college relationship between Ivy Tech and the Wuxi Professional College of Science and Technology. Ivy Tech – Columbus/Franklin faculty will enjoy their second exchange trip to Wuxi in October.
Wu Li, an information technology professor, and Jian Peng, an electronics professor, will visit Ivy Tech – Columbus/Franklin during the month of September. The primary purpose of the exchange is to share and compare curricula and teaching methodology. Following curriculum comparisons for a number of disciplines, student exchanges will begin.
During their month-long visit, the two Chinese faculty members will tour various Ivy Tech campuses, sit in on both academic and short-term training classes, and become familiar with American culture. They will attend sporting events, festivals, and other activities that will provide them an opportunity to understand our culture and educational system. They will also present their culture and educational system to our faculty, staff, and students during guest lectures within our classes and workshops on campus.
“Having our faculty, students, and staff gain more knowledge of and experience with another culture creates an international awareness that will better prepare our students for success in a global marketplace,” said Sue Smith, Corporate Executive for Advanced Manufacturing for Ivy Tech.
Wuxi, China, is 80 miles from Shanghai on Tai Lake and has a population of over four million; it is one of China’s top 50 cities, nicknamed “Little Shanghai” for its growing economy. Cummins Inc. has key production bases in Wuxi. The sister agreement with the Wuxi Professional College of Science and Technology furthers one of Ivy Tech’s primary strategies – to ensure that Indiana’s citizens, workforce, and businesses are globally competitive.
