Ashley McClure is an extremely successful graduate of Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus.

Ashley graduated from Jac-Cen-Del High School in Osgood, Indiana, in 2002. She entered the graphic design program at Ivy Tech-Columbus directly after high school and enrolled in such classes as Fundamentals of Design, Typography, and Graphic Design. She comments, “I really enjoyed everything about the program. All the instructors were so helpful, knowledgeable, and available to meet with me if I had concerns about the class work. After finishing the courses, I really felt that I knew the “ins” and “outs” of the software being used in the design industry and felt ready to compete with graduates from other programs for the available positions out there.” (more…)

Ivy Tech students assist with United Way move back
Friday, February 25th, 2011

Doug Otto, president of United Way of Bartholomew County, Inc., recently expressed his gratitude to Jan Banister, assistant professor and chair of the Interior Design program of the Ivy Tech-Columbus School of Fine Arts & Design, and two Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus interior design students, Hayli Hopkins and Dawn Shepherd, for their assistance in helping United Way agency staff members with their move back into the United Way Center.

In a recent letter, Otto said, “As you know, we had a big wish list of support we needed in order to manage the move of seventeen agencies back into the Center. With your help and the assistance of Hayli Hopkins and Dawn Shepherd, we not only achieved our goal in a timely manner, but we conquered it with ease.”

Shepherd and Hopkins, students in Banister’s Contract Design course, held during the fall semester, worked 100 hours in the classroom and 60 hours, each, outside the classroom to inventory donated furniture and plan work spaces for the staffs of all of the agencies moving back into the United Way building, which burned in December of 2009.

The furniture, donated from manufacturers, organizations, and private individuals, including desks, chairs, filing cabinets, panels with hanging storage, credenzas, shelving units, work stations, etc., was stored in four different locations throughout the city. Shepherd and Hopkins went to each of the four facilities to create an inventory of all of the items, categorizing them for future use.

The students interviewed the staffs of every agency that was planning to move back into the United Way building to learn their space needs and to design appropriate areas and placement of furniture within those areas.

Banister commented, “I was pleased with what the students learned from this service project, especially since their learning was beyond either a lecture or a textbook—they learned from actually doing the work. The experience is valuable in the design workplace, as it parallels what designers are called upon to do regularly.”

Ivy Tech’s Jeff Green wins Making IT Happen award
Friday, February 25th, 2011

Jeff Green, Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus adjunct instructor in communications and computer information systems technology and Jennings County Schools faculty member in television production, is the only educator in Indiana and one of only 44 educational professionals in the world to win the 2010 Making IT (Integrated Technology) Happen award.

Making IT Happen is an internationally recognized awards program for educators and leaders in the field of educational technology integration in K-12 schools. The program, introduced in 1995, identifies and rewards educational technology leaders from around the world for their commitment and innovation.

Recipients of the award are selected for their ability, among other criteria, to apply available technology, to see students as people, to teach through relationships, and to motivate through awareness and access to information. They are lauded for being inspiring, encouraging, and nurturing educators.

Crediting Jennings County high school, middle school, and North Vernon Elementary media students for their hard work, Green commented, “Although our school channel will never be confused for NBC, it reaches 38,000 homes on two cable companies and shows that JCS can make do with what we have.”
