Ivy Tech – Columbus accommodates Head Start with special curriculum
Friday, April 2nd, 2010
Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus has accommodated the Early Head Start program by offering the courses required for students to obtain a Child Development Associate credential in a condensed period of time for 13 employees working for the Early Head Start by April 1. A total of 120 hours of classes that normally take two semesters to complete are being offered in an intensive format of 40 hours per week for three weeks.
The special program is supported by an $825,000 grant received by Head Start from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus) funds. The program will serve eight expectant women and 64 children (0-3years of age), all residents of Bartholomew County, through both home-based and center-based assistance.
The Child Development Associate (CDA) is a nationally recognized competency-based credential for child care providers. The credential is granted by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C. The CDA is widely recognized as an entry-level credential for the Early Childhood profession. Ivy Tech offers the four courses that meet the requirements for the CDA: Introduction to Early Childhood Education; Health, Safety, and Nutrition; Curriculum in the Early Childhood Classroom; and CDA Process.
