A new creative writing course, ENGL 202, will be offered during the spring semester at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus. Taught by Patrick Nevins, Assistant Professor of English and Communications, the course will be offered in two different formats – face-to-face and as an Internet course. Credit earned in both will transfer fully to four-year institutions.
The focus of the face-to-face course will be poetry and short stories, according to Nevins. Held in workshop style, the students will share some of their writing with classmates in order to use their constructive criticism and that of the professor to revise their work. “Students will be involved in writing and rewriting as the course progresses,” commented Nevins. Evaluations of professional publications of short stories and poems will also be a part of the course. At the end of the class, each student will have a portfolio of polished work.
The Internet course will allow students to practice writing in the genres of fiction and poetry, as well as creative nonfiction and drama. This creative writing course will also be offered as a non-credit class in the spring through the department of Workforce and Economic Development, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., February 18 – April 8.
