Ivy Tech-Columbus EMT graduate Brian Lucas receives award

Brian Lucas, a December, 2008, graduate of the Ivy Tech-Columbus basic emergency medical technician (EMT) course and a resident of Sweetwater Lake, recently received the Second-Half Champion Award, presented by Wells Fargo Advisors. The award is given to individuals who are 50 years of age or older, have achieved remarkable personal goals, or have made significant contributions to society, or are using the second half of their life for a purpose completely different from the first half. Winners are selected by a panel of judges representing Wells Fargo Advisors.

After 31 years as an air traffic controller, Lucas became a firefighter, an EMT, and a sheriff’s deputy. Using his EMT training, he saved a man’s life at Sweetwater Lake in June of this year. Crediting his instructor, Dennis Rose, Lucas commented that he had been a certified EMT for only five months when the incident occurred.

A design created by Kayla Straw, a second-year Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus visual communications student, has been selected as the cover for the poetry chapbook titled Night Duty, by Dave Seter. (A chapbook is a small book or pamphlet containing poems, ballads, stories, or religious tracts.) The book will be published by Main Street Rag, a publishing company based in Charlotte, North Carolina. (more…)

Ivy Tech-Columbus offers new creative writing course

A new creative writing course, ENGL 202, will be offered during the spring semester at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus. Taught by Patrick Nevins, Assistant Professor of English and Communications, the course will be offered in two different formats – face-to-face and as an Internet course. Credit earned in both will transfer fully to four-year institutions. (more…)

Five countries represented in new Ivy Tech-Columbus ESL Bridge program

New transfer program between Ivy Tech and IUPUI offers MET career path to students

A new collaboration will allow Ivy Tech-Columbus students who earn an associate of science in mechanical engineering technology (MET) to transfer all credits to the bachelor’s degree program in that same field to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), according to Steven Bardonner, chair of the departments of design technology and mechanical engineering technology at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus.
