Ivy Tech-Columbus Dual Credit program saves parents over $1 million, program grows over 100%

High school students from six counties saved $1,286,960 in college tuition last year by participating in the Dual Credit program offered by Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus, according to Tom Judd, Ivy Tech Director of High School Initiatives.  The number of students participating in the program this year grew by 114%, as noted in the attached graph; the amount saved increased by 112%.

In Bartholomew County, the number of participating students increased by 111% over last academic year, and parents saved $330,145, a 91% increase.

Ivy Tech Community College statewide enrolled 16,569 Indiana high school students in dual credit this year, a 43.9 percent increase from the number of students enrolled the previous year.  The 16,569 high school students completed 83,971 credit hours, saving Indiana parents nearly $8 million in college tuition costs. Last year, Ivy Tech enrolled 11,512 high school students who completed more than 58,000 credit hours, saving Indiana parents more than $5.5 million in college tuition costs.  Since the 2005-2006 school year, dual credit headcount at the college has increased by 141 percent.

Through this program, high school students take advanced placement/college-level courses at their high school, earning high school and college credit at the same time.  Since the Ivy Tech courses are tuition-free when taught as part of this program, the savings to participating students is significant, and, at the same time, students get a jump-start on their college careers.

Dual Credit courses, taught at the high schools by high school or Ivy Tech faculty, are college level, requiring a proficiency on the part of the student that is high enough to master them.  High school faculty who offer the Dual Credit courses must meet credential requirements and participate in professional development provided by Ivy Tech.  Dual Credit courses include such subjects as calculus, trigonometry, public speaking, political science, marketing, criminal science, and technical graphics.

The amount saved in the six counties of the Ivy Tech-Columbus service area is based upon tuition of $95 per credit hour multiplied by the total number of credits earned by participating students.  A technology fee is also included in this total.

The Ivy Tech service area includes the counties of Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, and southern Johnson.
