Rachel Vallejo-Bohnert, Assistant Director of Admissions and Latino Outreach Coordinator at Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus, has been selected as one of 80 prominent educators and community leaders from around the nation to participate in an in-depth seminar at the United States Naval Academy, scheduled for August 3-6 of this year. The seminar will showcase the undergraduate opportunities offered at the Naval Academy for young men and women, particularly those from minority communities. The two-day visit to the Naval Academy is offered with all expenses paid.
Vallejo-Bohnert was selected as a result of her assistance to Hispanic individuals interested in becoming Ivy Tech students and her leadership in Project Stepping Stone, a college preparation program for Hispanic youth. In organizing Project Stepping Stone, she worked with Ball State University, IUPUI, and Marian College, in addition to Ivy Tech-Columbus, in coordinating a seven-day program for 100 Hispanic students across Indiana. The program was geared toward helping these individuals successfully transition to college and careers.
Vallejo-Bohnert is bilingual in English and Spanish. Roger Bingham, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, commented, “Rachel provides an extra measure of comfort to students and their parents because she can speak in their native tongue.”
