Student Success Story: Barry Richmond

Barry Richmond was honored by being named the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus of Ivy Tech Community College – Columbus Region.  Barry received an associate degree in HVAC technology from Ivy Tech in 1980, and a bachelor’s degree in human relations management and master’s degree in management from Oakland City University in 1995 and 2001, respectively.  He is currently enrolled in a doctoral learner program in organizational leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Barry used his Ivy Tech degree as a platform for higher learning and to gain entry into the heating and air conditioning industry.  Starting out as a service technician, he advanced into the field of energy management engineering and then to vice-president of an energy controls manufacturing firm.  He attributes his success in these fields directly to the breadth, depth, and quality of his educational experience at Ivy Tech.  His life-long learning educational advice is:  “Arm yourself with a trade or professional certificate from a quality school such as Ivy Tech. This approach provides the security of earning power in the workplace and satisfaction in knowing you are well trained in a needed skill as you continue your life-long learning endeavors.”

Barry has risen through the ranks during his military career and now serves as Commander of Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center in Edinburgh, Indiana.  This premier training center and mobilization platform is responsible for providing all mobilization/demobilization support requirements to Reserve Component military personnel from all 54 states and territories. The base also supports homeland security and first responder training as well as active duty and other reserve component training resources.  In meeting these demands, with a budget of over $80 million, Barry leads and collaborates with a nearly 1,700-person joint team devoted to delivering superior support to those who come to Camp Atterbury to train.

The Adjutant General of the Joint Forces Headquarters of the National Guard praised Barry with these words:  “He quickly earns respect and facilitates effective leadership, while being determined to involve others in a collaborative effort; Barry also exemplifies a high degree of professionalism, judgment, integrity, program management, and interpersonal skills.”

Ivy Tech-Columbus is extremely proud of the outstanding accomplishments of its graduate and the recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award, Barry Richmond.  And Barry notes he is extremely proud of his personal Ivy Tech educational heritage and the partnership between Ivy Tech and Camp Atterbury and the Indiana National Guard.
